If your radiators not heating upstairs have suddenly turned the first floor into the coldest part of the house, the fault is usually somewhere in the heating system rather than the radiators themselves. Downstairs warming up while bedrooms stay chilly is a common complaint, and it often comes down to trapped air, low system pressure, poor circulation or a build-up of sludge restricting flow.
The good news is that some causes are simple to spot. The less good news is that recurring upstairs heating problems can be a sign that the wider system needs professional attention, especially if your boiler is also making noises, losing pressure or struggling to heat water consistently.
Why radiators not heating upstairs happens
Central heating works by pushing hot water around the system at a steady rate. In many homes, the upstairs radiators are the first to show a problem because they sit higher than the rest of the pipework. Air naturally rises, circulation issues show up more clearly on the upper floor, and any weakness in pump performance can leave heat struggling to reach the top of the system.
That does not always mean a major repair is needed. Sometimes the issue is isolated to one radiator. In other cases, every radiator upstairs is affected, which points to a system-wide fault rather than a single valve or fitting.
A useful first check is to notice exactly what is happening. If the radiator is cold at the top and warm at the bottom, trapped air is likely.
